Parents' Day Presentation

Philanthropy at the Goose!

On October 5th and 6th, Delta Chi and Kappa Alpha Theta teamed up to keep the Goosey Gander open late for dinner. All proceeds from the event went to the Jimmy V foundation. Read about it in the Brown and White.

Public Calendar Now Online

Due to popular demand, we've launched a public calendar section on our website to keep our alumni, family, and friends informed of our activities. The calendar will include all relevant events during the school year including alumni meetings and activities, colony meetings, public events and fundraisers as well as many popular rush outings.

If you already use Google calendar or even if you only have a Google account, you can click the "add calendar" button at the bottom right of the widget on the calendar page to add the Lehigh Delta Chi Public Calendar to your own calendar, keeping you informed with updates and allowing us to automatically send you reminders regarding what's going on. Even if you like to keep it old fashioned, you can keep checking back from time to time to see our updates posted on the website under the calendar tab. As always, important events will be sent out via the Delta Dispatch and our "E". Either way, make sure you don't miss out on all the great things we have lined up for this semester!

Brotherhood Spotlight - Jeremy Thiesen

I'm pleased to introduce a new weekly feature which will run through at least the end of the year; The Lehigh Delta Chi Brotherhood Spotlight. Each week we will sit down with one of our brothers and learn a little bit about them. I hope you enjoy it. Our first Brotherhood Spotlight has focused its beam on Jeremy Thiesen. Jeremy is a Senior, Statistics Major, and our current B.

For starters, how did you end up at Lehigh University? It's quite a distance from your home in Colorado.

Well, it was my last hope. I applied to 9 schools, most of which were Ivy leagues or equivalent, such as MIT. I was rejected to all but Lehigh and Rose Hulman. Lehigh was rated higher on the party list, and seemed to be in a better location. So here I came.

Are you glad you chose Lehigh over Rose Hulman?

Most definitely. There has rarely been a dull moment here. I have also received amazing experience that I believe will help me both get a job and succeed. The experience I am referring to is my Delta Chi experience. I learned so much about leadership, dedication, and what work needs to be done in my positions within Delta Chi. If you don't know. I started as Public Relations Chair, then I was simultaneously Brotherhood Chair and Intramurals chair, and now of course, my dream job, "B".

What made you decide to join Delta Chi over the other fraternities on campus?

I actually did not want to be in a fraternity my freshman year, and had pretty much decided against fraternity life at the time. I didn't particularly enjoy their parties because they were all the same, which is one focus I have for the coming semester. So, I decided to not be a "frat brother".

However, when the opportunity to start something new was presented to me, I could not pass up the chance. I applied to be president and vice president along with Tim, Esposito and others. I wanted to make a perfect fraternity for me. I now realize how much work that is, but it does fuel my desire to improve Lehigh Delta Chi.

How has being in Delta Chi affected you?

Well, like I mentioned earlier, it has grown my leadership, work ethic, and management skills. Other ways it has changed me is I used to be very shy. However, starting my college career I wanted to change that. Delta Chi has been a great social facilitator giving me many opportunities to grow socially that I have taken advantage of.

Perhaps a negative effect would be my grades have suffered slightly since joining, however the benefits I describe above far outweigh those losses.

You mentioned various leadership positions you've held within the fraternity, the latest, and largest being the position of B. What challenges have you faced as B?

Many. The first I would say is within though. To become Vice President, you have to learn to lead. I would say it has really taken a full semester to understand leadership, and I know I still have a long way to go. Challenges on the outside are devoting the time needed, listening to many different opinions as well as making sure that people get both heard and don't scream.

I have gotten calls about quitting chairs wanting to quit their positions, which I have had to talk them out of doing so, and re-motivate them. I have had to sacrifice some nights that I was planning on staying in to host a fraternity event, and even following my vision for the future has been challenging at times when it seems like everyone is trying to lead you in the opposite way.

What would you like to see for the future of this colony?

Well, the first thing that popped into my head is to no longer be a colony, however that is not my vision. I in a way would prefer to not become a chapter, and succeed just to set an example that becoming a chapter isn't everything.

My true vision, which I hope to come to fruition in the coming semester and year is to make this a leader's fraternity. What I mean by that is to take everyone and grow them into brothers that take initiative, fight for their fraternity in terms of prosperity, and become business/political leaders or revolutionaries in their field of expertise.

In basic terms, the way I plan to do this is by giving everyone the opportunities to help them succeed. Let them contribute in a big way in the area that they could really grow in due to their passion in their areas of interest.

So tell us, what was the craziest thing you did as a child?

This is a hard one. After all the denser material, I want to analyze what crazy is, but we should forego that. I am going to have to go with telling my parents that cold didn't affect me, then proving it by running outside naked in the snow. There are even pictures to prove that one.

How old were you when you did this?

Probably about 6 or 7. Hard to remember.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Watching Movies, hanging out with my best friends, pondering the way of the world, and trying to have some fun by trying out some of the more "odd" activities in life.

Can you share an example of one these "odd" activities?

Testing the limits of your shame. For example, Dutch and I have acted like statues in front of Linderman Library. Other things I have tried would be the didgeridoo, kayaking, getting lost, meditating, speaking in a British accent for a day, basically I like to try things "normal" people don't do.

If you could meet anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

This is a tough one because I kind of want to meet someone from my dream job, medieval strategist, however I will have to go with Martin Luther King Jr. at this moment. I choose him because one thing that I am curious about right now is motivation, how to create it and how to bring massive crowds to follow you is an amazing skill. I am not sure if he would have an answer for me, but I think meeting him would give me a hint.

Last question. You are a Statistics major, so this should be pretty easy. 12 members were present at a board meeting. Each member shook hands with all of the other members before & after the meeting. How many hand shakes were there?

Ok. Forgive me if I am wrong here. If we think about the problem: the twelth person shakes hand with the other 11, so thats 11 handshakes. Then we can consider the same problem with 10 people. Thus 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. 11 + ... + 1 = 12(11)/2 = 66. Multiply that by two to get 132 handshakes. Perhaps enough to cause a little global warming.

Well done, fraternity life obviously hasn't been that detrimental to your education

No, but perhaps a couple more times on the Dean List could have been in order.

Summer Events/ABT Meeting Reminder

Greetings friends,

I hope you've all been having a great summer- I certainly know I have. While summer classes have already started their second session we've learned that while it's unfortunate that the work never ends, we're thankful that our brotherhood stays strong. It's heartening to see so many brothers spending so much time together even in the off season of fraternity activities. If you haven't already decided to make a trip down to Lehigh at some point before the start of the school year I recommend you give us a call and head on down to give us summer dwellers a visit.

In fact, a perfect visitation opportunity would be this coming weekend at the ABT meeting. As those of you who have read through your summer newsletters should already know, our summer ABT meeting is scheduled for this Saturday, July 17th at 2:00 pm in the Holy Ghost Church, followed immediately by a cocktail hour and reception, where friends and family are encouraged to join. Alumni, if you have yet to see the new colony in action, now would be a perfect time to swing on by.

Community Service Update

"Over the past semester Delta Chi has been working hard to help the community in many different ways. We have served as waiters at Fish Fry Fridays at the university parish, raised money for a women's shelter by collecting used cell phones, and most recently have been doing clean up projects around campus. On Saturday April 10th a majority of the brothers helped in a cleanup effort of Goodman campus. Clad in orange vests and gloves, brothers spent their Saturday morning helping Lehigh look a little bit nicer. The very next Saturday we had brother participate in the Southside Bethlehem cleanup, on the opposite end of campus. Through our service we hope to build our presence not only on campus, but as an non-residential fraternity, our community relations too."

Week update

Initiation is only 9 days away from us, and the excitement is in the air. As our AMs approach Pre Initiation week, they have been growing closer and closer to each other and to our bond. For those of you who are unfamiliar with our associate member program, Pre-Initiation activities include a number of evenings that reflect on all that the AMs have learned over the course of the last six weeks and prepare them to finally experience our ritual. Anyone who has any questions regarding our new member program should contact our AMC, Andy Dutcher at acd311@lehigh.edu. Again, Initiation is scheduled for April 8th, and if any alumni are interested in coming, let me know so I can call you with the details.

Our alumni secretary is in the works of moving some events around, including the phone a thon and meet and greets (the last one was rescheduled at the last minute due to technical difficulties). He will be in touch with the alumni as he gets more details. To make sure you're receiving notifications from the colony, send your information to our "E" at evs211@lehigh.edu.

There is an ABT meeting scheduled for Saturday, April 17th. Details for this will follow soon. The colony and myself hope to see some familiar alumni faces as well as meet some new ones that day.

Finally, one of our goals is to use this website in the future as a recruitment tool. We will be working on developing not only sections of the website with information about the current executive board and brothers, but also to announce scheduled recruitment events for the fall and spring. Hopefully this will allow recruits to see what we're all about, even if they don't get face time with each and every one of us. I will be posting developments on this in the future as they happen.

Some Updates

In an attempt to keep everyone up to date with what's going on colony-side, here's some updates on the exciting stuff coming up in the next couple of weeks:

This Thursday, the colony will be participating in an alumni phone-a-thon, so if you're an alumnus, look out for a call from one of our actives Thursday night! Actives, if you would like to participate, please contact Eddie for details.

Saturday morning we will be having a brotherhood retreat to go over values, goals, etc for the colony. Look out for some pictures from that in the near future.

Eddie (our "E") is tentatively planning a second Alumni/Alumni Initiate meet and greet session on Wednesday, March 31. Contact him at evs211@lehigh.edu for details.

Finally, as our Associate Member program draws to a close, we are extremely proud of the achievements of our newest group. The Beta Class initiation is scheduled for April 8th, 2010. Alumni, please feel free to contact me if you would like to attend the ceremony (azs212@lehigh.edu), and I can send you the details.

Delta Chi Helps with Fish Fry Fridays

For three weeks now, the brothers of Lehigh Delta Chi have been helping the Church of the Holy Ghost in Bethlehem serve, cook, and clean up their annual Fish Fry Fridays during Lent. All of the brothers have been graciously received by the congregation for their contributions. Community and Service chairman Jesse McDonough has been extremely happy with the turnout and service put forth by the brothers, which has helped them towards their goal of 300 Community and Service hours by the end of the semester. We look forward to helping the Holy Ghost Church in the coming weeks before Easter, and to continue servicing the community as best we can.

A Note from Jeremy

It has been such a long semester already, but Lehigh Delta Chi is really starting to make some strides. We are very proud of our 10 new Associate Members, and I know that we all see the great potential in them. I am very excited that in a year or two they will be leading the brothers into the future.

In other business, we are making very large strides into understanding the parliamentary procedure and order of our colony meetings. We have come a long way since last semester and the AMs have experienced this first hand in their first colony meeting.

Finally, I would like to say that functionally we are really taking strides in order to smooth over officer transitions. In the near future, I fully expect us to be a well oiled machine.

Welcome Back

Time really does fly lately, now that things are in full swing here at Delta Chi. So much so that I realized it's been two months since the last post on this website. I'll be changing that semester, even if it comes down to myself having to post random thoughts on a regular basis (although do expect to see posts from all corners of the Delta Chi community).

With one week down in the semester, we're already a quarter of the way into rush. Our open house last Tuesday got us a hefty list of freshmen to work with, adding to list of upperclassmen that's been building up since our last AM class. We've got three weeks to go and a respectable list of rush events lined up, so things are looking good for Lehigh Delta Chi's first freshman AM class. If you have any questions or would like to know more about rush (or of course if you're an interested student) contact Dan Lockman (djl511@lehigh.edu).

If you ask me, I'd say there's a lot of good things to come in the upcoming weeks and even months. It would be wise to subscribe to this blog to stay up to date on events, news, and everything else Delta Chi. Some of the older brothers have asked me about commenting on these posts- just click on the link bellow that says "0 comments" (or whatever number it has at the time) and it will take you to the comments page of that blog post. 2010 Elections

Our Colony of Delta Chi has reached the end of its first year here at Lehigh. Perhaps the word "end" is the wrong choice, as we truly have created a bonded brotherhood that remains one of the strongest on campus. I wholeheartedly believe that we will continue to maintain that reputation in the years to come.

The elections of our second term officers took place last Sunday, the 15th of November, 2009. On behalf on the entire outgoing Executive Board, I would like to congratulate these men who have genuinely shown the characteristics of true Delta Chi's.

Saturday was our Hibachi Date Party at Sakura Japanese Steakhouse in Whitehall. The brothers and their dates got to experience a nice dinner and a show, all in one!

Welcome friends and newly inducted members of Lehigh's colony of Delta Chi!

I would first and foremost like to thank our alumni for remaining steadfast in their never-ending desire to keep Delta Chi an influence here on campus. Without their efforts over the past years, our strengthening colony would not exist. Our appreciation for their efforts, and for the efforts of all Delta Chi alumni, cannot be expressed in words. We do hope that they will continue to check our newly renovated website for upcoming news and events, and stay ever in the bond.

The brothers of Delta Chi are exceptionally excited to welcome three prestigious men - Jesse McDonough, Greg Sills, and Brian Maisch. The members of the Alpha AM Class were inducted on the evening of Thursday, October 8th, in the social hall of the Holy Ghost Church. We are very pleased to have these associate members, and look forward to the next weeks in which they will learn the philosophies and ideals of a member of Delta Chi.

As always, we have stayed strong over the last year in our belief that "great advantages are to be derived from a brotherhood of college and university men," and will continue to find prospective members of such high-caliber in our everyday lives.

Delta Chis and friends,

I am excited to see this blog up as a key component of our communication between Actives, Alumni, and the community at large. Improvements to the site with permanent information are coming in due course as our webmaster has time to handle them. Please join as followers of the blog so that you will remain updated, this is intended to be a very active site with pertinent information which we want you to have and we hope you look forward to receiving.

As President, I have seen the Colony's founding father class develop by leaps and bounds over the course of the past 6 months. A group of men, some of whom we had never met before, have fast become some of our best friends. We are striving to bring a lasting body of the Delta Chi fraternity back to Lehigh's campus, a body of which we can all be proud to call ourselves a part.

I will keep this post short, though some of you may think it has already surpassed that subjective qualification. Please check back often for updates as we move through this first semester of recruitment, look to initiate a fall Associate Member class, push forward towards chartering, and attempt to strengthen the bond of brotherhood into which we have entered.

On Saturday September 20th the brothers of Lehigh Delta Chi spent the afternoon discussing brotherhood, progress of the chapter, re-assessing goals, and finally some ideas and pointers for recruitment straight from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Needless to say it was a day of fun and excitement for all our new Delta Chi's.
